So every year I give a report on the nuthatches that nest on my porch light sconce, not that it’s a topic of much interest to anyone but me. Still, I consider it a miracle that they return every year around this time, particularly given all the environmental hazards and obstacles they face along the way. I’ve recently been glancing up at the nest and wondering if they would arrive. They showed up overnight, and mom’s sitting in her nest this morning so that much is right with the world.
I’m often given to reflections on animal intelligence and have of course dropped a few comments here on the topic. A suet feeder outside my window unfortunately attracts chipmunks who have to snatch what they can from whatever drops from the suet cage while under attack from a woodpecker or finch or whatever visitor. I moved it to its current location after the chipmunks figured out how to access it, and it was safe until now when one wily critter figured out how to get on the roof and climb upside down across the facia to drop onto the cage. He skitters off as soon as I open the door or tap on the window, but I can’t keep monitoring the situation. Also, I’ve watched the blue jays teach themselves to latch onto the cage and peck upside down. Before they’d try to do a hovering maneuver and thrust a beak hoping to extract a sunflower seed, but now they’re pros.
As long as I’m giving a wildlife report, I recently returned home to see a Lynx perched on the deck’s edge with its back to me and its twitching in anticipation of pouncing on some rodent or another. The birds had of course ditched the neighborhood. I took a bunch of photos and inadvertently made a noise which caused the cat to turn around and look at me. I plunked on the floor and we stared at each other for a few moments before it arose and trotted up the hillside. The photo I got showed it looking back over its shoulder at me with what I swear was a look of disgust. It later dropped some turds on my trail just to let me know who’s boss. I find these kind of calling cards from time to time whether feline, canine or osine. Deer droppings are too common to count. That’s all I have for now.

So every year I give a report on the nuthatches that nest on my porch light sconce, not that it’s a topic of much interest to anyone but me. Still, I consider it a miracle that they return every year around this time, particularly given all the environmental hazards and obstacles they face along the way. I’ve recently been glancing up at the nest and wondering if they would arrive. They showed up overnight, and mom’s sitting in her nest this morning so that much is right with the world.
I’m often given to reflections on animal intelligence and have of course dropped a few comments here on the topic. A suet feeder outside my window unfortunately attracts chipmunks who have to snatch what they can from whatever drops from the suet cage while under attack from a woodpecker or finch or whatever visitor. I moved it to its current location after the chipmunks figured out how to access it, and it was safe until now when one wily critter figured out how to get on the roof and climb upside down across the facia to drop onto the cage. He skitters off as soon as I open the door or tap on the window, but I can’t keep monitoring the situation. Also, I’ve watched the blue jays teach themselves to latch onto the cage and peck upside down. Before they’d try to do a hovering maneuver and thrust a beak hoping to extract a sunflower seed, but now they’re pros.
As long as I’m giving a wildlife report, I recently returned home to see a Lynx perched on the deck’s edge with its back to me and its twitching in anticipation of pouncing on some rodent or another. The birds had of course ditched the neighborhood. I took a bunch of photos and inadvertently made a noise which caused the cat to turn around and look at me. I plunked on the floor and we stared at each other for a few moments before it arose and trotted up the hillside. The photo I got showed it looking back over its shoulder at me with what I swear was a look of disgust. It later dropped some turds on my trail just to let me know who’s boss. I find these kind of calling cards from time to time whether feline, canine or osine. Deer droppings are too common to count. That’s all I have for now.

Obviously one hopes these and all other such videos can be used to track down and arrest every arrestable person identifiable by face in these videos. One hopes Mayor Mamdani cares enough about working class people to turn the city’s police personnel loose to really work out on these sports fans.

I had to wash police cars when we got caught stealing what we referred to as ‘beemer caps’ which were the shiny metal screw-on caps for tire air valves that were on predominantly BMWs but other expensive cars as well. As opposed to the cheap plastic caps most cars have.
I don’t know what a ‘proper’ penalty for this is.
No one was immediately physically harmed but it being the man’s livelihood that can be construed as a physical harm but the bus is a huge yellow public bus not a private delivery van.
It’s not the same as glyphosating a farmer’s fields or arsoning a small business or breaking into someone’s private home or apartment or tent-in-a-public-space-because-you’re-homeless and subsequently stealing or vandalizing something.
And if it’s a public bus operated by a private company why does a group act of publicly aggressive destruction against property come out of the dude’s own check?
Would that be true if it were entirely a public bus?
Is that why they privatized everything via ‘public-private’ partnerships?
And at the same time all that has happened the wealth divide has become even greater to the point of obscenity.
And so more and more young people – who made up the majority if not all of the people on top of and inside of and, errr, ‘energetically pummelling’ the bus – more and more young people feel entirely left out of the system entirely.
So would this have even happened if the wealth divide weren’t so obscene and if there was still a true ‘public’ – remnants of which still existed throughout the eighties and into the nineties?
