The horizon is not so far as we can see, but as far as we can imagine

Remember 9/11, When America Went Mad

So, it’s the anniversary of when America went even more insane, because they lost less people than their sanctions on Iraq had killed during the preceding years. (But those people were important people, not faceless masses.)

I remember 9/11 well, I was working in a big corporate office. My customers were American. Everything ground to a halt, a big screen was put up so people could watch the events, since clearly no work was going to get done. We even had customers in the Towers, though my personal closest customer was a couple blocks away.

I turned to a co-worker and said, “Jesus, I hope the Americans don’t attack the wrong people.” He thought that was absurd.

We all know how that turned out, In addition 9/11 was used to turn the US into a police state thru the Patriot Act, which only one Senator, Russ Feingold, had the guts to oppose. (Some time later he lost a re-election, since the last thing most Americans want in a Senator is judgment, bravery and integrity as a package.)

America went on to openly torture, invade a country which had nothing to do with 9/11, set up a worldwide assassination program, and Senators also signed over essentially all the remains of their war powers, so that any President could declare war any time for any reason. (Lucky that, so far, Trump hasn’t taken advantage of that. Obama, of course, did and there are open-air slave markets in Libya now.)

Bin Laden’s plan was to get the Americans to stop the proxy wars and invade and occupy using their own troops, so they could be defeated and the myth of their superiority destroyed, while they suffered the effects of imperial over-reach: wasting resources and time on far foreign wars. (In many schema of imperial collapse, this is one of the primary causes.)

At first it looked like he’d failed. Afghanistan in the first couple years didn’t do much to America. Then, in what Bin Laden must have viewed as Allah intervening, the Americans went mad and attacked Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11 and whose leader was a secular Arab and enemy of Bin Laden’s.

Anyway, great and good are not synonyms and bin Laden was the first great man of the 21st century. He may have died, but so what, he basically accomplished his goals, and so much of US rapidity of decline can be traced back to 9/11.

Bin Laden understood himself and he understood his enemy. He won. America, despite being overwhelmingly more powerful, understood neither itself nor its enemies, and lost.

Nothing important to stop American decline or even slow it has been done since 9/11, it’s all been pedal to the metal, and now there are nationwide protests; riots; the most important state in America (that’s California, because it creates the future) is on fire, and the US is ruled by a reality TV star who wasn’t even a good billionaire.

On the anniversary of 9/11 remember, Bin Laden punked America. He won. You lost. You lost because you acted like monsters and fools, lived down to his opinion of you. Bin Laden was evil, to be sure, but he knew America was evil and stupid, bet hard on America’s evil and stupidity, and won.

If Americans want to save their country from decline and collapse, all they have to do is be smart and good.

So far the smart money is that they’ll do neither of those things.

I wish it were otherwise.

As if Bin Laden had anything to do with the controlled demolition of the towers.

We have no idea who brought them down, but it certainly wasn’t the 2 planes that flew into WTC 1,2 and 7.

Do yourself a favour and watch for just 3 mins.

    Punked indeed.

The collapse that people perceive around themselves often is a telltale sign of the slow ruin of their own lives. While those personal artifacts that they desperately cling to crumble away the warnings of societal doom become even more severe. Until people insist that everything is going to hell because it is self-justifying, allowing them to avoid owning their lives.

Misery loves company. Disembodied voices that tell us how right we are. And we\’ll do anything to keep the stream of affirmation going.

    Adios.

I remember Russel Brand noting that when he was poor people said that he was just a jealous loser, but now that he’s rich and famous, well, he’s a silver spoon socialist.

Imagine some European during the Black Death, “I’ll just own my own life and it’ll all be OK.” Some native resident of the Caribbean “Ill just self own, and the Spanish won’t genocide me along with everyone else.”

Meanwhile California burns, after Australia did, almost all social welfare statistics for the majority of Americans are in decline and have been for decades, 2/3rds of all mammalian wildlife has died in the last 50 years, and someone is saying “it’s you, not the world.”

The cult of self-ownership is useful for helping oneself. It is worthless for social analysis or understanding the world. And it is going to run a lot of idiots into a brick wall when the world doesn’t cooperate.

  4. Chicago Clubs

Was this inspired by Krugman’s ridiculous tweet about how, “Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly”? Because I, too, remember 9/11 as The Day America Went Insane and Never Recovered. Not that it was “great” before then, but it really started the tightening of the death spiral.

And here’s another couple of people who don’t understand Occam’s razor.

Bin Laden denied the 9/11 attacks were his doing/responsibility. What kind of terrorist denies one of his greatest achievements to date? No terrorist worth his salt which belies the claim Bin Laden and Al Qaeda were capable of pulling off 9/11. Either way you look at it, Osama and Al Qaeda did not plan and execute 9/11. Who did is anyone’s guess and a rabbit hole not worth exploring.

    https://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/16/inv.binladen.denial/

Anyway, as I’ve said, Trump Trumps bin Laden and Al Qaeda. They are rank amateurs by comparison. Odonald bin Trump is the supreme bioterrorist. Maybe one day soon he will also be the supreme nuclear terrorist. We’ll see.

The various media outlets are talking about how brave everyone was that day. I guess bravery died that day. Where is the bravery now? Soon enough, Odonald bin Trump will have murdered over 200,000 Americans in cold, torturous blood and there is a not a brave soul to be found. The entire American Establishment has stood down and by and watched him do it and not only have they stood down, but they’ve gotten wealthier for it.

By January, over 3,000 Americans per day will perish from the pandemic. That’s a 9/11 per day and the person responsible, the Terrorist In Chief, is not only at large and still will be at large then, but he’s actually the President of the United States — the most powerful position in the world, admittedly.

New York City came back from 9/11. It will not come back from Odonald bin Laden and the perpetual effects of his COVFEFE-19 virus.

  7. Willy

Well I for one, have just tried Mikeys’s advise. I’m experiencing miracles!

Coronavirus has been cured. Climate change really was just a hoax. The US national debt has disappeared. Extinct species are coming back to life everywhere. The city riots have ended, and so have all the endless wars. The wildfires have self-extinguished. Medical, education and housing costs are back to 1960 levels. China is giving back all of the jobs and technology we gave them and now every male can easily support a family with happy stay at home apron wives and cheerful children with bright futures playing in the backyard with their water weenies. Even the street dwellers have packed up their tents and are going back to school in the hope they’ll claim their own slice of the American Dream.

I don’t know what to say, except for… gee thanks Mikey!

  8. Mikey Ruppert

During a genuine collapse, people will be requiired to take responsibility for themselves because the Nanny State will eventually not be there to cater to their every need, whim, and comfort.

And when that happens, all the precious snowflakes will realize that Mother Nature does not believe that they are entitled to anything…

  9. Ian Welsh

We know, Mikey. I don’t know how the billionaires will keep going without all their subsidies, let alone Wall Street without the Fed put.

It’s big of you to care about them, though.

“I have been a supporter of President Trump since he announced he was running in the early days of 2015. I have watched from afar and I admire this man’s resolve,” she said. “He must be reelected … It’s vital not only for the future of America, but western civilization as a whole.” Noor bin Laden (who loves QAnon fyi)

Have you noticed the dearth of terrorist attacks in the last couple of years? The Terrorist In Chief has sucked all the terrorist oxygen out of the room, or out of the biosphere I should say. He is Al Qaeda’s man in the White House. No need for puny, crude-and-simple-by-comparison terrorist attacks when you have your man Odonald bin Laden murdering hundreds of thousands, soon to be millions, of Americans in cold blood at will and you get the rubes to vote for their own murder.

  11. Mikey Ruppert

    @Ian Welsh

The cult of self-ownership is useful for staying alive.

Because Mother Nature does not grade on a curve once the Nanny State has left the building.

Sigh, but it is so much easier to sit in front of the computer and catalogue the evils of the world and moralize endlessly than to actually do real work.

Unless, of course, you work in psyops…

I swear this is all going to turn me into a Freudian! We’ve had other terrorist actions, from the Oklahoma City bombing to the cascade of school shootings. A few days of thoughts and prayers take care of those. Every month a 9/11 count of Americans die for lack of medical insurance, with a bonus death month each year. Politicians’ vows to “keep us safe” apparently count only when they can blow up stuff for profit. George W. Bush was a fine president who “kept us safe”–I don’t have a clue how that one slips past us. It’s about fantasy rather than reality.

I’m left with the contemplation of the biggest phallic symbol in the country’s biggest city housing business offices that made the country’s richest men just collapsing when the little brown foreign men hit them. For our betters, it’s the stuff of nightmares made real.

The U.S. is a nanny state if we assume a sadistic abusive nanny that should be reported to child protective services.

Here’s my gardening story for today.

I knew a libertarian gardener once. He tossed fruit and vegetable seeds out onto the ground and left them to their own devices. Sadly, what weeds, varmints, and drought didn’t ruin the neighbors dogs did. He then blamed the nanny state for that failure.

I also knew a communist gardener. He put a ton of effort and expense into keeping everything all the same, all nice and neatly maintained. Sadly, his psychopathic wife became dictator of that proletariat and had him killed, and then she mismanaged the garden into oblivion. She blamed her husband for that failure. And that libertarian gardener.

I tried suggesting to both that maybe something in between libertarianism and socialism might be optimal. But neither gardener ever spoke to me again.

The Lawyers Committee For 9/11 Inquiry is hosting a Zoom conference this Sunday, September 13, from 3-6 PM EST. Speakers include Bill Binney, George McGovern, Francis Boyle, and Barbara Honneger. All that off-topic BS plus using “Nanny State” twice makes me wonder if Mr. Welsh hasn’t flushed a classical Libertarian of the old school.

The ones I recall from the defunct Indy-Star forum loved GWB with all their hearts, and thought the Second Amendment definitely covered 16″ battleship guns. They also hated the “Nanny State” with a passion – Personal Responsibility was the only answer to whatever social problem was under discussion.

The Saudis pushed to reduce restrictions on their nationals visiting the US.
They gave their education system over to their most radical and anti-Western religious leaders.
They promoted jihadism as long as it wasn’t aimed at them.
Osama bin Laden was both a product of this and ran into problems at least with this last in the KSA because of it.

The Twin Towers had already been a terrorist target in 1993.

The Bush White House knew some kind of attack was coming, but really didn’t have its act together to know or care.

After the 9/11 attacks, Bush/Cheney took aim at Iraq mostly because it was a neocon wet dream and the thinking was it would be a more stable platform for American bases than the KSA, and there was the oil.

The 911 Commission never assigned blame for all the failures that led to the attacks because it was in its creation specifically directed not to.

It is a complicated story filled with deceit on all sides, but importantly none of the usual 911 conspiracies are needed.

Saddam was not secular, enforced Sharia Law in civil matters, banned anything that was outright blasphemy against Islam, and had religious police cutting people’s hands off for stealing as well as general morality enforcement.

Qaddafi’s Libya was a far more massive Human Trafficking Hub than it is today and he was not in any way ‘Secular’ and like Saddam, banned anything outright blasphemous.

Let’s at least get the facts straight please. America being a sinner does not make these men Saints.

Hugh, I’m not going to quibble with anything you said, but both you and Mr. Welsh left one important player in the 9/11 affair totally unmentioned.

The Apartheid state has, by means of bribes, blackmail, and religious fanaticism been directing US foreign policy for decades. Every single nation posing the slightest problem to the pissant state excepting Iran has been smashed by the US. Why else is there such a drumbeat to install Biden to manage that unfinished business?

  30. bruce wilder

It really did happen that way.

I tend to believe that better leadership might have taken the country in a better direction, but the already far-advanced decadence of American politics precluded such a possibility.

The madness was a symptom of the social and political pathologies set in motion in the 1970s and only opposed weakly and ineffectually.

I remember realizing within a very few days that the Bush Administration was going to war against Saddam Hussein. The propaganda narrative was fully prepared to make that a plausible if not strictly logical course of action, so it hardly took any genius on my part to see it coming — it was practically in the air we breathed. There were two 9/11 conspiracies: Osama Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda nurtured one; the other was called, Project for a New American Century, and it was peopled by the worst sorts of neocon fools and liars.

A wiser leadership in the West would have taken the occasion of Soviet collapse as both an opportunity to close down the military-industrial complex and as a forewarning. I remember reading Paul Kennedy’s The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers circa 1988 and thinking surely people will understand that this time should be different.

Ian’s essay here focuses attention the essential immorality infecting the American People, as well it should. More than inexcusable ignorance and stupidity are involved. A political culture flooded with feckless manipulation is run by a parasitic elite, but it finds fertile ground and a credulous audience in a passive, disorganized morally disjointed populace.

I occasionally get it into my head to challenge a meme floating thru the ether and the response I typically get in meat space is even stupider than I find online. (I do not venture far online — Crooked Timber is about the worst I can stomach; LGM for comedic styling even the Onion fails to match.) QAnon is weird, but Obama murdered people and nothing they fantasize is really any weirder or more unfounded than the meme that Joe Biden is a decent, empathetic fellow.

Years ago, I was one of those people protesting to the Public Editor of the NY Times against the late columnist William Safire promoting the clearly false notion of a connection between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 hijackers. He would barely concede that Safire’s hyperbolic claims were unfounded in any but the wispiest speculative smoke, but not that it mattered. Now, of course, we have so-called fact-checkers and the facts mean even less to those guys.

Years ago a famous book of philosophy argued that bull shit was the product not of a will to deceive with falsehood, but rather a fundamental disregard for the value of truth. And, that permeates elite American political culture — the rough, complicated, nuanced, dubious, uncertain truth does not matter. I argued against Russiagate online and in meat space and the reaction — in real life it could be fierce enough to nearly justify psychiatric treatment — and the absolute refusal of many in elite public life as politicians or journalists to acknowledge how thin the case was, was astonishing to me.

I think most Americans are completely disengaged from politics. They are like the dogs in a Far Side cartoon, hearing only a very few words in the babble. The dogs do not really understand language though they learn words and tone and some gestures. Americans understand natural language but not the nonsense spoken by politicians and journalists. Politicians can give idiotic speeches and journalists will give a theatre review highlighting the fashion statement made by what she wore.

Still, how much does it take to understand perpetual war is bad public policy? Really is that something only understood by those of us inhabiting the Putin-leaning left (I really should stop reading Crooked Timber)?

Really, the only explanaton, the only excuse I can offer is there is nothing we can do. Voting does no good, if no capable or sincere leader can be found (or more likely, can survive). If we are not organized enough to vote, we really are not organized for war. Life during a civil war among the self-owned with no nanny state to handle logistics truly would be nasty, brutish and short. Maybe what we deserve for losing the republic to this mess of credentialed “winners”.

  31. Gaianne

    😀

I open up my browser on a fine September day–now that the worst of summer is over here in New England the weather has been really great–to discover it is “9-11” and Ian has written a dark, funny essay that I probably cannot show to any of my friends!

Yes it is a generality, but is also true: Americans will do almost anything to avoid self-knowledge.

    –Gaianne

  32. Ché Pasa

Gee, has it really been that long? Hard to believe. I was in Seattle sleeping in a hotel room across the street from the central library that was being demolished in preparation for the new one that still stands. I was awakened at about 5:50am by sirens outside and what sounded like the demo crew getting to work. Seemed early for that sort of thing. I got up bleary-eyed and looked out the window. Didn’t really see anything out of the ordinary, but the siren continued wail and demolition sounds periodically pounded away. It was cloudy/foggy out.

I did my morning wash-up and at about 6:00am I turned on the television. Saw something I couldn’t even imagine — one of the World Trade Center towers was burning; commentators were befuddled, said something about a plane hitting the tower, or that’s what they thought; as they were jabbering, something hit the other tower and a huge explosion burst out of the side. The commentators were in shock, as was I. W.T. A. F?

Another plane. This wasn’t a tragic accident. It was an attack. Half an hour or so later word came that something had hit the Pentagon. There were casualties and a large fire.

I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Nor, I think, could most people who were aware of it early on. It seemed inconceivable. Who would do such a thing? Why?

There was a report of another plane crashing in Pennsylvania, possibly headed to DC. I called the office where I was supposed to work that day and asked whether we were still scheduled to come in. Yeah, no. Yes come in. No, we weren’t going to be doing much work. Instead, we sat and watched on the big screen what every one else was seeing on their TeeVees and tried to figure out what to do. Word came from HQ that we were free to go, but because we had traveled to Seattle from California and all over the West, we’d have a hard time getting back because flights were grounded. I found a rental car at Alamo and with a colleague started the long drive home the next day.

The immediate shock didn’t lift for more than a week, and I don’t think it’s entirely gone even now.

Everything changed after 9/11/2001, and not for the better. The assassination of President Kennedy changed things, as did the 1968 assassinations. This was an order of magnitude greater a change, yet we were expected to just accept it, go on as if nothing were that much different, and most people did.

Now we’re living through an even greater paradigm shift, and no one is saying “carry on” as if everything will be back to normal shortly. No, it won’t.

In a few months or years we won’t even recognize where we are and few will understand or care how we got there.

What Jimmy Dore giveth with one hand, he taketh away with the other. Substitute video for hand.

No, Jimmy, I don’t hate Trump because I’m a warmonger. Your logic, or illogic I should say, fails.

Jimmy, you’re almost there but your need to make a living by appealing to QAnon undesirables is blocking your emancipation. You continually regress into the faux Left/Right paradigm and its paralytic trappings.

Hugh, please explain how a terrorist who isn’t even a pilot and at most had a few hours on a flight simulator flies the plane into the Pentagon the way it’s claimed. Impossible. Yes, impossible. Not even highly unlikely. Impossible. It didn’t happen the way it was claimed. Why lie about it? If that’s a lie, and it is, then what else is a lie versus the truth? Because we sheep would panic like the authorities panicked on 9/11? Yeah, no, I don’t think so. They lied because of something far more sinister and malevolent.

  34. Dan

Be careful Plague. You’re bringing up truths even many here can’t fathom.

  35. Fred Simplethoughts

Another very misleading article. 9/11 was the start of untold riches for some Americans. The New Era of Terror was a massive acceleration of the proverbial American Dream and all of the materialism and power granted there within to the 1% and an even smaller percentage. This American Dream, it must be mentioned, was open for recent immigrants and other minorities who are much richer than they ever would have been had been.

Therefore, this wasn\’t a war on terror this was a war for peace. A peace that extends right through the challenges of a pandemic, inevitable all along, but much more peaceful for those who fought and profited from \”the wars.\” The losers are always the ones screaming the loudest about peace because that is a guarantee they will lose. I hope readers understand there is always a war going on and 9/11 didn\’t have too much to do with it.

Ché Pasa, everything changed, but look at us now. 196,000 Americans dead from Covid-19 because of a disaster of a President who can’t organize a one car parade, and yet despite the vastly greater magnitude, the devastation to us, we seem to be anesthetized into a kind of a denialist time warp, business as usual in a where and when that has nothing normal or usual in them.

Plague, re Hani Hanjour the Saudi who piloted American Airlines flight 77 which crashed into the Pentagon, in 1996, “he began taking flying lessons in Arizona.[1] He received his commercial pilot certificate in 1999, and went back to his native Saudi Arabia to find a job as a commercial pilot. Hanjour applied to civil aviation school in Jeddah, but was turned down. Hanjour left his family in late 1999, telling them that he would be traveling to the United Arab Emirates to find work. According to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Osama bin Laden or Mohammed Atef identified Hanjour at an Afghanistan training camp as a trained pilot and selected him to participate in the September 11 attacks.

Hanjour arrived back in the United States in December 2000. He joined up with Nawaf al-Hazmi in San Diego, and they immediately left for Arizona, where Hanjour took refresher pilot training. In April 2001, they relocated to Falls Church, Virginia, and then Paterson, New Jersey, in late May where Hanjour took additional flight training.”

Sanders was a Representative back in 2001, and he did vote against the Patriot Act (HR 3162) which passed the House anyway 357-66 on October 24, 2001. It passed the Senate the next day 98-1, and yes, Feingold was the only Senator to vote against it. Biden, of course, voted for it.

By your own admission, Hanjour was a terrible pilot who couldn’t even pilot a Cessna 172 despite a commercial pilot’s license let alone the skill to perform the acrobatics necessary to fly the corkscrew descent pattern used to guide the jet traveling hundreds of miles per hour at ground level into the side of the Pentagon — a feat highly implausible for the most experienced of pilots let alone an unpracticed flunky.

Alleged Flight 77 pilot, Hani Hanjour has a history of great difficulties in his efforts to learn to fly. As late as August 2001, he was unable to demonstrate enough piloting skills to rent a Cessna 172.

Federal Aviation Administration records show he obtained a commercial pilot’s license in April 1999, but how and where he did so remains a lingering question that FAA officials refuse to discuss. His limited flying abilities do afford an insight into one feature of the attacks: The conspiracy apparently did not include a surplus of skilled pilots.

Wes Fults, the former manager of the flight simulator at Sawyer School of Aviation in Phoenix, gave Hanjour a one-hour orientation lesson when he arrived as a new member of the school’s “sim club” in 1998. “Mr. Hanjour was, if not dour, to some degree furtive. He never looked happy,” Fults recalled. “He had only the barest understanding what the instruments were there to do.”

Believing Hanjour piloted a jet into the Pentagon on 9/11 is believing Donald Trump could run the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds or less. It’s not credible. So, why lie about it? Why did they lie about this and so many other things? Criminal investigators will tell you that lying is a tactic to cover up guilt.

  46. Hugh

So Plague, are you speaking as al-Qaeda’s flight manager or just out your a–? You make statements with no citation until you are called on it. You then cite what is apparently one NYT article which questions Hanjour’s skills but as far as I can tell doesn’t say what you say: that he couldn’t run the plane into the ground.

  47. Plague Species

…but as far as I can tell doesn’t say what you say: that he couldn’t run the plane into the ground.

We’re not talking about a hole in the ground in Shanksville, Pa.. We’re talking about the Pentagon which is so much more than running a plane into the ground because it was in fact allegedly running a plane into the ground level floor of the Pentagon. It’s disingenuous of you to phrase it that way.

    https://www.citizeninvestigationteam.com/faq/can-north-side-plane-hit

It is impossible for any fixed-wing aircraft to cause the directional physical damage to the light poles, generator trailer, and the Pentagon leading to the C-ring hole approaching from directly over the Navy Annex and north of the former Citgo gas station. The flight paths illustrated by the witnesses would require G forces beyond the physical limitations of any aircraft for it to transition to an approach that lines up with the physical damage. Additionally, a hypothetical least challenging scenario at low speed would require bank angles that are irreconcilable with the physical damage, as well as the witness statements, and require an instantaneously performed roll that is impossible for any fixed-wing aircraft.

Most things are done out in the open with those responsible secure in the knowledge that most people won’t remember what happened beyond the next few weeks., or will obligingly invent their own conspiracies to explain it. What I consider to be the most relevant part of Hugh’s remarks is this:

There are lots of liars and bad actors out there.

Some of them would be paid liars. Others are delusional and self-important idiots. The people who engineered 9/11 need all of these characters to dilute the remarks of the sensible and knowledgeable folks who are writing about the events of September 2001. (Ditto for the Kennedy murder and other similar events) My link is to another era, but illustrates the principle.

Some mighty strange things happened 19 years ago, and they’ve been mostly kept out of the spotlight because of all the nonsensical crap stirred into the story to distract gullible folks who don’t know much about science and/or engineering.

Hugh, WAPO, admittedly anti-conspiracists in the conventional use of that marginalizing term, admitted the “official” version of 9/11 is a conspiracy.

Here’s the pertinent quote from the larger WAPO quote above.

The conspiracy apparently did not include a surplus of skilled pilots.

Apparently, all conspiracies are not created equally. Some, for whatever reason, have more weight than others and are considered and accepted as legitimate whereas others are rejected without consideration. A double standard is in play. A convenient double standard, I’d say.

If Osama and Al Qaeda did 9/11, they would have claimed responsibility immediately. That’s the way it works if we’re to believe that Al Qaeda is(was?) a terrorist organization hellbent on destroying America and allegedly made no bone about their goal. Instead, Osama denied responsibility. What kind of terrorist denies such a successful strike against the United States? Certainly not a terrorist, and terrorist organization, capable of such a clever adn complex strike.

Assuming for the moment Al Qaeda and Osama were responsible for 9/11 despite Osama denying it, that famous quote from the movie The Deer Hunter comes to mind. One shot. The sheep-herding cave-dwelling masterminds, geniuses that they must have been to pull this off, had to know they had only one shot at something this bold and brazen compared to their previous work. It would have been incumbent upon them to dot every “i” and cross every “t.” A surplus of flunky, unskilled pilots is not congruent with that fundamentally crucial requirement. Osama and Al Qaeda cannot be both crude and unsophisticated on the one hand and clever and sophisticated on the other. It’s one or the other. You can’t have both. Not when you have only one shot.

  55. Plague Species

Not sure why progressives persist in discrediting themselves with the next whack “theory”/conspiracy.

I can’t speak for “progressives,” only myself, but I have no theory. What I do know from a deep dive into the facts is that 9/11 did not happen per the official narrative. The official narrative is therefore a lie. Why lie? As I said before, in any criminal investigation, if someone being questioned is lying, ten times out of ten, it’s to cover up the truth which necessarily implies guilt be that guilt directly or guilt by association and indirect complicity.

  56. Plague Species

You must remove the preconceived notions, the emotions, and just focus on the facts.

    http://www.deepjournal.com/p/7/a/en/2659.html

A pilot with a major carrier for over 30 years told CNN that “the hijackers must have been extremely knowledgeable and capable aviators”.[8] An air traffic controller from Dulles International Airport told ABC News, “The speed, the maneuverability, the way that he turned, we all thought in the radar room, all of us experienced air traffic controllers, that that was a military plane. You don’t fly a 757 in that manner. It’s unsafe.”[9]

CBS News suggested that according to its sources, Flight 77, “flying at more than 400 mph, was too fast and too high when it neared the Pentagon at 9:35. The hijacker-pilots were then forced to execute a difficult high-speed descending turn. Radar shows Flight 77 did a downward spiral, turning almost a complete circle and dropping the last 7,000 feet in two-and-a-half minutes. The steep turn was so smooth, the sources say, it’s clear there was no fight for control going on. And the complex maneuver suggests the hijackers had better flying skills than many investigators first believed. The jetliner disappeared from radar at 9:37 and less than a minute later it clipped the tops of street lights and plowed into the Pentagon at 460 mph.”[10]

The Washington Post similarly noted that the plane “was flown with extraordinary skill, making it highly likely that a trained pilot was at the helm”. Hanjour was so skilled, in fact, that “just as the plane seemed to be on a suicide mission into the White House, the unidentified pilot” – later identified as Hanjour – “executed a pivot so tight it reminded observers of a fighter jet maneuver.”[11] The Post reported in another article that “After the attacks … aviation experts concluded that the final maneuvers of American Airlines Flight 77 – a tight turn followed by a steep, accurate descent into the Pentagon – was the work of ‘a great talent … virtually a textbook turn and landing,’”.[12]

In our world, nobody can keep a secret. Most things are done out in the open with those responsible secure in the knowledge that most people won’t remember what happened beyond the next few weeks., or will obligingly invent their own conspiracies to explain it.

A decade or two back, I found this convincing. Now, given the sheer viciousness of the persecution of whistleblowers, I don’t any more. The invention of ten false conspiracy theories doesn’t mean that an eleventh one is false. The way to keep claiming it’s false is to keep any original documents/wiretaps/videos secret, and it’s the release of those things that have sent our leaders into paroxysms of cruelty towards Manning and Assange in particular.

  59. Hugh

nihil obstet, something like the looting by the rich isn’t a conspiracy. It is a decades old struggle carried out with lots of propaganda but very little real secrecy. 9-11 conspiracists find something they consider odd. And what starts out as odd immediately transitions to “impossible” and an explanation breaker. What gets lost in all this is that, once you enlist a cadre of suicide attackers, the 9-11 attacks were mind-numbingly easy. What gets lost is the culpability of Saudi Arabia in the attacks. Or Bush’s criminal incompetence, even before the fiasco of the Iraq war. But instead we get vast, absolute declarations that Hanjour wasn’t a good enough pilot to crash a plane. I don’t find much of this serious. If you are going to propose a conspiracy theory, you have to show how that conspiracy fits into a narrative, and that that narrative is more powerful and coherent than what is already out there.

Whistleblowers getting nailed is part of the larger conflicts we witness. They and what they exposed fit into the narrative of those conflicts. Weird theories seeking to blame Israel or the CIA for 9-11 is about as persuasive as blaming the Martians.

  60. Plague Species

If you are going to propose a conspiracy theory, you have to show how that conspiracy fits into a narrative, and that that narrative is more powerful and coherent than what is already out there.

9/11 was a crime, not a story or a narrative as you say. As such, it should be investigated like any other crime. I’m critiquing the so-called “official” investigation. In particular, the part about the Pentagon. It doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. I have no theory. I do not know who or what is responsible for 9/11 and I doubt we will ever know definitively. What I do know is, the so-called “official” investigation doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. That it’s a fabrication. A lie.
The other stuff you mentioned, although related to 9/11, does not change the fact the so-called “official” investigation of the crime that was 9/11 is bollocks.

Also, invading and occupying Iraq was in no way incompetence. It was a deliberate, malevolent act. Those responsible knew exactly what they were doing. Cheney, the architect of it, knew the risks and did it any way. Cheney isn’t stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing. Incompetence is apologia for his war crimes. It lets him off the hook. Biden, since he supported it and voted for it is every bit as much a war criminal as Cheney. It’s one of many reasons I won’t be voting for Biden or for anyone for that matter. There are no good options and we are are well past lesser of two evils having any meaning or effect.

Cheney says in the video below from 1994, “invading and occupying Iraq and toppling Saddam would create a quagmire.” Less than 10 years later he sponsors and spearheads the invasion and occupation of Iraq that topples Saddam thus creating a quagmire and all its implications to include incredible profits for defense contractors. 9/11 was crucial in “making the case” for the invasion and occupation and toppling. In fact, without 9/11, Cheney couldn’t have made the case even though the case he made was all lies just as the so-called “official” investigation of 9/11 is largely a pack of lies.

A person who has spent a good part of his career helping the wealthy and powerful escape justice weighed in on Hani Hanjour. Did anyone really think Mueller would hurt Trump? I never entertained such delusions. Bob’s The Fixer.

From the Deep Journal link above.

Hani Hanjour is the hijacker who flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon on the morning of September 11, 2001, according to the official account of terrorist attacks. “The lengthy and extensive flight training obtained by Hani Hanjour throughout his years in the United States makes it reasonable to believe that he was the pilot of Flight 77 on September 11″, concluded FBI Director Robert S. Mueller.[1] The story is that while Hanjour had difficulties learning to fly at first, he persevered, overcame his obstacles, and became an extraordinary enough pilot to be able to precisely hit his target after performing a difficult flight maneuver.

No, Bob, it’s not “reasonable to believe,” as you say. It’s unreasonable to believe it. It’s absurd to believe it. What is reasonable to believe, Bob, because it’s a fact, is that Donald Trump is Osama bin Laden times one million. He is the Terrorist In Chief. And you’re fine with that, which also makes you a terrorist, Bob, at least as far as I’m concerned. Nearly 200,000 mostly unwashed Americans have been murdered in cold blood by Odonald bin Trump and you’re complicit in it, Bob. Not that you care. Mass murderers have no conscience.

What gets lost is the culpability of Israel’s partisans in the attacks.

  69. Plague Species

What gets lost is the culpability of Saudi Arabia in the attacks.

Pursuant to this, Saudi Arabia not once, but twice, denied Hani Hanjour admittance to flight school. What an odd thing to do, wouldn’t you say? I mean, how does this square with culpability especially when you compare and contrast it with the American government going out of its way to transform this flunky into a crackerjack pilot.

<blockquoteThe Washington Post reported that according to Hanjour’s brother, Yasser, “Hanjour applied for a job at the state-owned Saudi Arabian Airlines but was told that he lacked sufficient grades…. He said the company told him it would reconsider his application only if he acquired a commercial pilot’s license in the United States.”[21] Yasser characterized Hanjour “as a frustrated young Saudi who wanted desperately – but never succeeded – to become a pilot for the Saudi national airline.”[22]

Hanjour again left the country on April 28, 1999. [44] As the 9/11 Commission report observed, when he returned to Saudi Arabia to apply in the civil aviation school in Jeddah, he was rejected.[45]

According to FAA inspector Michael Gonzales, when Pan Am International Flight Academy contacted the FAA to verify that Hanjour’s license was valid, “There should have been a stop right then and there.” The Associated Press reported that Gonzales “said Hanjour should have been re-examined as a commercial pilot, as required by federal law.”[57] But that was not done. Instead, the FAA inspector who “even sat next to the hijacker, Hani Hanjour, in one of the Arizona classes” and “checked records to ensure Hanjour’s 1999 pilot’s license was legitimate” concluded that “no other action was warranted” and actually suggested that Hanjour get a translator to help him complete his class. “He offered a translator,” said the school’s manager, who “was surprised” by the suggestion. “Of course, I brought up the fact that went against the rules that require a pilot to be able to write and speak English fluently before they even get their license.”[58]

As a detective, I’d like to know the identity of the FAA inspector, if he’s still alive, and interrogate him about his going-the-extra mile behavior in bending over backwards to ensure Hani Hanjour transforms into a crackerjack pilot whilst Saudi Arabia rejected not once but twice this timid incompetent flunky who couldn’t even fly a Cessna 172 without intervention from copilots to prevent it from crashing.

Plague’s attitude toward any reality that doesn’t fit his view of the world or how he would like the world to be is that it is a lie and hoax. Kind of reminds me of someone else only with orange hair.

Odonald bin Trump is anti-science and it’s no coincidence he agrees with the FBI, with Bob Mueller and so many others who pretend to oppose him including you apparently, that Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. To believe this, that the Boeing 757 that was Flight 77 allegedly piloted by The little terrorist who could Hani Hanjour hit the Pentagon, is to disbelieve math and science as the following video illustrates.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtlzCyKbw5Q&feature=youtu.be

Note, I have no idea what caused the damage to the Pentagon and who and what is responsible. What I do know is, it wasn’t Flight 77 and it wasn’t Hani Hanjour and Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda as alleged per the 9/11 Commission Report.

Some of the Many Things Most Americans Never Heard About 9/11

The “Dancing Israelis” who turned out to be Israeli Mossad agents caught filming and celebrating the destruction of the twin towers. Arrested by police and released without investigation, they were not mentioned in the 911 Commission Report. Later on Israeli TV they said they were sent to New York to film the destruction of the twin towers. Allegedly, there was no advance warning of the event, but obviously the Israelis knew.

The alleged fundamentalist orthodox fanatical Muslims who were prepared to die to be martyrs, but who drank, drugged, and lived with strippers and prostitutes in Florida. They were the patsies paraded through flight schools and left a highly visible public record. They all flunked out and could not even fly small planes, but performed miraculous flight feats in their attacks on the WTC towers and Pentagon that military and civilian airline pilots say are beyond their own skills. These Saudi Arabians were being operated by US or Israeli intelligence to create a record to serve as a parallel patsy operation that could be used to cover up the false flag attack.

Numerous video cameras recorded whatever exploded at the Pentagon, but the FBI has refused to release them for 18 years. Clearly, the videos do not support the official story.

About half of the alleged hijackers have been found alive and well and deny that they had ever left their countries.

In 2001 no cell phone calls were possible from aircraft at the altitudes from which calls were reported.

The airliners that allegedly hit the twin towers were flimsy compared to the steel and concrete of the towers. The airliners would have smashed against the structure and fallen to the street below.

Pre-knowledge of 9/11 was widespread. The stocks of the two allegedly hijacked airlines were sold short prior to the event, resulting in large profits when the stocks fell in response to the hijackings. The short-sellers were swept under the carpet and not investigated.

FBI director Robert Mueller was instrumental in covering up for the false official story of 9/11, a story that has zero evidence in its behalf.

If a handful of young men with no intelligence service or government support can defeat the entire national security state of the United States and all of its NATO and Israeli allies and successfully attack with devastating results both New York and the Pentagon itself—the very symbol of American military supremacy—the Soviet Union could have wiped out the US and all of Europe without detection. Don’t you wonder how we survived the Soviet Union when the “Great American Superpower” was so easily defeated by a handful of young Saudi Arabians?

Four hijacked airliners are alleged hijacked, all at airports served by an Israeli security company. All four airliners allegedly crash. Two into the WTC towers, one into a field in Pennsylvania, and one into the Pentagon. Yet no airliner debris exists. The Pentagon’s lawn is not even scratched.

The President of the United States refuses to testify before the 9/11 Commission unless he is accompanied by his handler, Vice President Cheney. Both refuse to testify under oath. The 9/11 Commission is oh-so-respectful to the distinguished president and vice president.

One member of the 9/11 Commission, a US Senator, resigned from the Commission, saying that “the fix is in.” After the Commission report was issued, the Commission chairman, vice chairman, and legal counsel wrote books in which they said that information was withheld from the Commission, that the Commission was lied to and considered referring the false testimony to the Justice (sic) Department for prosecution, and that “the Commission was set up to fail.” And not a peep from the controlled pressitute media whose only function is to deliver the controlled explanations that the ruling oligarchs want planted into Americans’ minds.

Tenants of the WTC buildings reported constant noises, floors sealed off, service disruptions and that the excuse was the installation of fiber optic cable. If the buildings faced condemnation as reported because of asbestos fireproofing, who would go to the expense of installing fiber optic cable to upgrade the Internet capability of condemned buildings?

Scientists have found reacted and unreacted nano-thermite and other elements used in controlled demolition. They have proved the existence of these elements. They have samples from the WTC dust left which they have offered to scientists and governments for testing in order to prove or disprove their own findings. No takers.

Instead, we have the appearance of nonsensical claims that the WTC buildings were brought down by a directed energy weapon and by nuclear bombs. These are preposterous allegations, the purpose of which is the deliberate creation of disinformation in order to focus attention away from the false official story and bury it in disagreements about what caused the buildings to fail.

I have checked with weapons specialists who are critics of US government foreign policy and who monitor every development in weapon systems in the US and Russia. This is what they tell me: “I can confidently state that no direct energy weapon, capable of demolishing such a structure at the Twin Towers, existed in 2001, nor does it exist today.”

Another reported that there are lab tests of directed energy in Russia but no deployed weapon. He suggested that people who believe in this fantasy story should explain the safe source of high energy that the alleged weapon used, and how it was moved on site and removed without detection. Moreover, a directed energy burst would show on detectors which monitor the electromagnetic spectrum. No such evidence exists. Since no such weapon has ever been tested to bring down skyscrapers, why would the government take the risk of using such a weapon for the first time in a public scenario where who knows what could go wrong and explanations would have to be given? And why reveal to foreign powers the existence of such a weapon? Controlled demolition is an old and familiar technology that works. And it did.

I could go on and on.

I really miss the old days, when men were men and whack jobs used to care enough to pound out dense little screeds of their own rather than just cutting and pasting grifters. I guess that’s the problem with giving the vocal stupid a home – always a race to the lowest quality of troll.

  75. Willy

As a former engineer who’s seen the FEA simulations of the compromised WTC structure (can still be easily found online), I’m actually a bit surprised that all of that suddenly under-supported weight above the crash zones didn’t pancake that structure down more quickly. There’s far less redundancy built into those systems, than say, a standard stick built suburban home, for financial reasons. The amount of inertia up top, in all directions, is amazing to me. Maybe Plague can do his own experiments with tinkertoys?

I’d think that even a quasi-civil engineer such as bin laden could forsee such a catestrophic end result. Leveraging boxcutters into a trillion in damage scenario is genius. No doubts there are other disgruntled geniuses out there looking for their big chance. Sadly, reverse-leveraging trillions of dollars and thousands of lives into one captured Saddam and a few henchmen, is less genius. Unless vulgar displays of power was the goal.

What I find it interesting is that even taller and slimmer structures are being increasingly built, such as the supertalls on Billionaires Row, without any apparent forethought regarding intentional maliciousness.

  76. Plague Species

Willy, the core of WTC 1 & 2 is, or was I should say, the majority of the strength of the buildings. I can understand some pancaking, but what isn’t understandable or believable is the core ripping apart as it did and falling in its imprint. My expectation would have been some partial uneven, versus symmetrical, pancaking exposing some of the core still intact with the majority of the building intact and still standing.

But I’m not focusing on the towers at this juncture. Just the Pentagon. I have proved, actually others have proven, that the “official” narrative, and I call it a narrative or story if you will because it can hardly be called an investigation, as it relates to the Pentagon is a fabrication. This has been proven with math and science. If you refute the math and science, well, you’re no better than Trump who prides himself on eschewing math & science in favor of whatever he says it is or should be.

Since you’re an engineer, surely you understand the math and physics involved in arriving at the impossibility of Flight 77 pulling that many g’s to level off after the last light pole before penetrating the Pentagon so perfectly without hitting the ground well before it. This means, necessarily, the flight data the NTSB released is false. This means the flight path per the “official” narrative is bogus. Per credible eyewitness testimony taken in proximity to the Pentagon event, the flight path of a plane that approached the Pentagon at low altitude that day in proximity to the explosion at the Pentagon, is further north of the “official” flight path and as such, it would have been impossible for this commercial jetliner to have caused the damage to the Pentagon in the way it did. Fyi, in my estimation from reviewing it all closely again and again and again, that flight path, the true flight path, the plane could not have, and did not, struck/strike the Pentagon. It flew directly over it as the explosion was detonated. A witness at the Pentagon saw the plane on the east side of the Pentagon immediately after the explosion at very low altitude flying over the parking area and away from the Pentagon. The witness, by the way, has been muzzled.

  77. Plague Species

Once again, math and science refutes the gravity collapse theory.

    https://www.ae911truth.org/images/WTCPhysics/World-Trade-Center-Physics.pdf

Per review of that painstaking analysis, it’s clear my expectations have been validated. The pancaking wouldn’t have been symmetrical and the partial collapse if there was at all should have been fully mitigated at the 96th floor. The core above that would have been exposed and largely intact. It’s clear the collapse was aided by demolition experts.

I mentioned I watched The Looming Tower on Hulu a couple of weeks prior. It was painful to see it through to the end because it was such blatant disinformation. One example of how disinformational it was is that they claimed John O’Neill’s remains were found in the rubble. Bullshit. Just as it’s bullshit one of the hijackers’ passports was located in proximity to the Twin Towers. It was, of course, pristine.

    https://wtcresearchorg.com/9-11/the-passport-phenomenon/

The passport of 9/11 hijacker Satam Al Suqami is reportedly found a few blocks from the World Trade Center.

Barry Mawn, the director of the FBI’s New York office, will say that police and the FBI found it during a “grid search” of the area. However, according to the 9/11 Commission, the passport is actually discovered by a male passer-by who is about 30 years old and wearing a business suit. The man gives it to New York City Police Department Detective Yuk H. Chin shortly before 9:59 a.m., when the South Tower of the WTC collapses. The man leaves before he is identified. Chin, according to the 9/11 Commission, will give the passport to the FBI later in the day. An FBI timeline concerned with the 9/11 hijackers will state that the passport is found by a civilian “on the street near [the] World Trade Center,” and is “soaked in jet fuel.” According to FBI agent Dan Coleman, Al Suqami’s passport is handed to a New York City detective who is “down there, trying to talk to people as they were coming out of the buildings.” By the time the detective looks up again after receiving the passport, the man who handed it to him has run off, “which doesn’t make sense,” Coleman will say. The passport is then given to a detective on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Coleman will say that by this evening, “we realized… that this was the passport of one of the people that headquarters had identified as one of the 19 probable hijackers.” Investigative journalist Nick Davies will later write that he talked to “senior British sources who said they believed that the discovery of a terrorist’s passport in the rubble of the Twin Towers in September 2001 had been ‘a throwdown,’ i.e. it was placed there by somebody official.” The Guardian will comment, “The idea that Mohamed Atta’s passport had escaped from that inferno unsinged [tests] the credulity of the staunchest supporter of the FBI’s crackdown on terrorism.” (Note that, as in this Guardian account, the passport will frequently be mistakenly referred to as belonging to Atta, not Al Suqami…

Damn straight, or I should say crooked, it was a “throwdown.” No doubt about it. Telling, I’d say.

Personally, I believe that the planes were remotely piloted by the PTB.

It’d be far more efficient to have a couple small crews planting the devices at night with nobody around, than it would be to have hundreds of crews all over the place doing all the other stuff that would need to be done.

I got the idea from a Batman movie.
