Only in practice.
Transhumanism is one of those topics where I feel like Marx declaring “I am not a Marxist.”
Do I think transhumanism is basically a good idea?
Absofuckinglutely.
Do I like most of the people who call themselves transhumanists?
Fuck no.
I don’t like being human. I’ve spent days on end screaming in agony. I’ve lain in a mixture of my own puke and shit for hours, in so much pain I couldn’t move. I’ve thrown up more than many bulemics.
Then there’s aging.
Then there’s other people (see Israel, dog rape, genocide, etc, etc..)
Now don’t get me wrong: humans can be great. Someone did eventually come to my hospital room (an orderly, they do the real work) and clean off all the vomit and shit and a nurse did once save my life (I wasn’t entirely thrilled at the time, but she gave a damn.)
But the fact is that human life is often ass, aging sucks, illness sucks, being weak and powerless and pushed around by your own government or someone else’s government sucks, and so on. We’re stuck in bodies we didn’t choose, which often spend lots of time hurting us grievously and making us sick.
So if we could extend lifespans a lot while ALSO reducing the effect of aging, I’d be all for it. (We’ve done a bit of this already.) If we can reduce pain and suffering and disease and so on, I’m all for it.
If we can increase abundance and have a society where people don’t have to work but still have more than enough, that’s great!
And if someone wants to change their body so they like it more, I’m all for that. Good for them!
The problem with transhumanism is transhumanists counting virtual people who don’t exist and pretending their making decisions which will make trillions of people in an imaginary future better off while hurting people living today.
Silicon Valley morons who think they’re brilliant because they’re rich and who don’t get that improvements that don’t wind up helping the majority, but are gated behind massive fees are good for them, and no one else are the flag-bearers of modern transhumanism. It’s more likely the way we’re going that transhumanist technologies, as they are developed, will give us an elite that is smarter, healthier, fitter and lives longer while the masses live shit lives, suffer and die in droves.
It’s the problem with doing anything thru non-competitive markets. You want palliatives, not cures. You want a cure for cancer that costs 50K a pop, not to sell it just above unit costs so everyone can be cancer free.
If your first priority is being rich, and your second priority is helping people, your second priority doesn’t functionally exist.
Transhumanism is a great idea. I think human bodies basically suck. I think better bodies that hurt a lot less, age less and so and are modifiable so we can make our own choices rather than accept the result of evolution and the genetic lottery of who our parents are is a good idea. And while we’ve got a pretty good Pope right now, Christians can stick “suffering is good” where the sun don’t shine. They can have it, leave me out.
But too many modern transhumanists are obsessed with theoretical people who don’t exist yet and with getting rich, and not making sure everyone benefits.
If they can’t be trusted to even spread the wealth, how can they be trusted to share permanent genetic and technological advantages they could wealth gate to create a genetic (cybernetic?) aristocracy which is actually superior?
Transhumanism: great idea, despite what the trads say (If God made us so we suffer this much, that isn’t a good thing, it’s proof God is a piece of garbage.)
Modern transhumanists: mostly just people who want to be superior and gate it behind toll booths that make them wealthy and leave most people without the benefits.
(Aside: I’m putting off writing about the new Iran deal till we see the actual text of the agreement. Too many people saying too many different things. It sure does look like a US loss, but if so it’s a good thing even from a nativist perspective for the US to admit it rather than dragging out a situation which hurts them more than Iran.)
What I write here is for the benefit of everyone, but alas, I live in capitalism and I, and the site, take money to keep running. If you value the writing here and can, please subscribe or donate.

Sorry for your woes comrade.
I don’t think a technological solution is ever going to provide something preferable to the demiurge’s own mangled creation. You just end up with a multitude of demiurges and you can bet your life they and their archons will make sure that pain and lack will be introduced once they’ve trapped you in their Matrix.
Better to hope for extinction. If humans decided not to create new beings to suffer and be abused, that would make sense to me.
mago
A former student who was some kind of mathematical genius and a tech geek with whom I’ve maintained correspondence over the years seems to have disappeared—at least none of my messages have been received or answered.
Here’s his last message to me, sent last October from Warsaw:
“I recently became maximally transhumanist, my being (the abstraction on top of the machinery executing its actions) can be transferred (we only need a thick enough cable) and so all my mortal worries have alleviated themselves. I live in the love of the immortal machine.”
The kid’s gone somewhere, but who knows where? He’s beyond my reach for sure.
Oakchair
In the 50’s-70’s China made their rich/ruling class go work in the fields for a decade. Look how their country has turned out.
Now compare that to the West where the ruling class is so spoiled they consider paying a tax on their 4th vacation house brutal tyranny.
Sure suffering sucks but the results of a society ruled by people who’ve never experienced any speaks for itself.
Transhumanism isn’t about love and caring it’s about a visceral hate for the human condition and a desire to escape life. Look around you at the all the autistic children, sick, fat, miserable chronically I’ll people. That IS the result of transhumanism.
Nat Wilson Turner
Powerful and important piece. Longtermerism is one of the worst of the Sillycon valley cults. Check out Is Transhumanism a Religion?. Émile P. Torres is one of my go-tos for following those crowds.

Can we stop with this superior than everything and everyone eco misanthropy. Its just such tried and pointless navel gazing of the worst kind. A total and complete nonstarter of a statement of the rhetorical potential of arguing to paint the sky purple. If humans are so awful and existence so bad , please follow your own advice and kill yourself. At least stop participating in the society you hate so much. You get that at most it provides fodder for the corpos that : look see the left are just human haters who literally want everyone to DIE!!!!
Bob
“The left” are infatuated with factories and worker bees.
Mark Level
I’m with Bob, sensible as always. Let’s not forget Brion Gyson’s insight, “Man is a bad animal.” I wouldn’t go as far as voluntary extinction, though personally I’ve never been a Breeder, left no Spawn. Harper’s had a good piece on modern Don’t Breed people, they are not self-hating, they just have a philosophical committment, humans are evil, destroy their environment, flora, fauna and everything else, like the Ancient Essenes (the good, mystical Jews living in mountain caves) they feel Don’t Breed, don’t give up your Essence and create more miserable suffering. I’ll also agree, don’t serve the Demiurge, that never ends well.
Now I’m in my late 60s, trying to the extent I can Dylan Thomas’ Rage, Rage against the Dying of the Light!! I do need to excercise more, at times I do so, definitely walk a lot, most people who see me guess I’m in my mid- to late-40s, coz I still have a thick head of hair and most of my teeth, decent muscle tone. Rarely feel my full age, but Ian’s point is well taken, after hernia surgery in 2024, severe constipation from the opiate painkillers, 9 or 10 on the pain scale for 30-some hours, I wanted to die. BUT I found a solution, drove to the local grocery and bought a Green Apple, after 2.5 hours I was on the mend. (PS– Dylan T. didn’t practice what he preached. Hardcore alcoholic, he took like 18 whisky shots hanging out with friends at the pub, his last words were reportedly “18 shots!! A new record!!” before he hit the floor, ended the thread of living.)
But to the substance of Ian’s point, I will say being so old I still practice “Lifelong Learning”, do some reading and study nearly every day, a consitent program, keep my mind active, it’s a muscle like the other ones in the body.
I agree with Mary Shelley’s insight about Promethean excess, playing God also ends badly, see David Koresh and many others. Nonetheless I have made a serious study of Hermetic mythology, Qabalah, astrology, metaphysics (dangerous quicksand, be careful with it), yoga etc. It’s helped me over about 5 decades, but Your Results May Differ.
I think the one area where many people have innovated over the years is Culture. I’ll cite for instance Baudelaire’s poetic insight that the Dandy should be as “artificial” as possible, pursue Artificial Paradises via the Road of Excess. I’d also cite William Blake’s “Sooner strangle an infant in its cradle than nurse unacted desires.” Now I’m not a clothes horse, Punk style was my 20’s-30s dress, but I very much enjoyed the Gay Friendly movie Velvet Goldmine, where the majority were style-plates with some exceptions. It’s a thinly-veiled roman-a-clef about an alleged torrid love-affair between the grungy, well-hung proto-punk King Iggy Pop and the more fey and elfin David Bowie. Great Sci-Fi Easter Egg, Aliens on a space ship drop a relic onto the baby Bowie character left on the street in a basinette for adoption, by Public School, age 7, he’s asked what he wants to be by teacher, “A Pop Star, sir!!” Gay journalist tracked the whole thing, the relic passes on to him.
To close, we all have different goals, and Transhumanist applications vary in their value and desirability. The “I want to live forever and never age, can replace all my organs on the black market,” etc. Deep State says that both Putin and Xi were caught on a hot mic talking about their Swapping out healthy young peoples’ organs, “plan to live forever,” etc. Just the usual State Dept. Hate spew, not very credible.
Playing sports well and keeping your body healthy could be good transhumanism. Bad transhumanism could be the James Dean thing, fuck lots of boys, girls, men and women, abuse some, kill yourself in a hot rod, leave a good-looking corpse. Be a Finance Ghoul, make billion$, buy high-priced Prostitutes, men or women. Drug addictions or other obsessions are bad transhumanism. Spiritual practices are good TH.
Speaking of Bad TH, I will link to a fun new Podcast I just learned about, “Hysteria”, their “This Fucking Guy” segments. One on Jared Kushner’s daddy and puberty-blocker use by the Ken Doll without genitals, Jared’s ownership of 666 5th Avenue. Dumb as Dirt, Ivanka is the only Jenius (Trump spelling) in that family, a complete mediocrity, sub-mediocrity on the level of his dad-in-law. WannaBe Antichrist, but as the 2 Ladies note, Daddy bought his way into top Academia, family are slumlords, daddy K. set up his sibling with a Prostitute to punish them for narcing on Daddy’s Financial frauds. Filth all the way down. Never punished, no suprise. (The Puberty blockers originally a Norm Finkelsteing joke. It’s why I call Jared the Gum Golem, looks like he is made out of melting wax.)
“The Best and Brightest?” Not hardly. Chris Christie did one good thing in his life, prosecuted Daddy K, sent to a Country Club Prison. Anyway, link to the “Hysteria” podcast here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqfcXBIyQOc
If you want to rise on the planes via Transhumanism, choose wisely. Every gift taken from the TH Demiurgos will have a curse equal in power in it as well, see the Fable of Pandora’s Box. No Wonder Obama lied about “Hope” & “Change.” A better scammer than even Donald J. Trump. Oh, and DJT has never “met someone smarter” than Jared!! Tells you all you need to know. (I’m sure his mentor Roy Cohen was WAAAY smarter, and likely more Evil as well.)
Dan Kelly
‘Daddy K, sent to a Country Club Prison’
Haha. Mark you prompt a lot of memories.
Christie said his prosecution of that Kushner thing was the most disgusting vile thing he’d ever been involved in and then immediately reminded everyone that he was attorney general of New Jersey – thus invoking in most the image of one of the most vile disgusting places on earth.

‘a nurse did once save my life (I wasn’t entirely thrilled at the time, but she gave a damn.)’
Ian, if this is too personal I understand. Just wondering if I’m reading this correctly as essentially saying you wanted to die at some level then?
I mean, that’s a stupid question. You have described in intimate detail the horror of what you have gone through.
What I am asking is, you know, how close – then or since even if not in actuality then ‘in mind’ where I myself have been more than once in the past – though not due to physical rather mental anguish which feels weaker on my part I do admit.
But I’m still here and so are you despite having the knowledge and wherewithal to off ourselves and ‘end the misery’ in any number of ways that we ourselves may find amenable to ‘do the job.’
I always think of the hose from the tailpipe with the car in the closed garage because evidently you just sort of drift away that away.
Give me the beach boys and free my soul.
Anyway, I’m not the kind of guy to jump off a fucking bridge.
I will shoot myself up with a pure speedball and exit thatta way if I could ever conjure the balls to do it in the first place and I ususally don’t want to these days but…
Thank god for marijuana.
Anyway, thank you as always for your writing.
Ian Welsh
Dan,
they called in a surgical team in the middle of the night. If they had waited even 12 hours I would have died. In addition to very late stage ulcerative colitis, I also had an undiagnosed case of appendicitis which they discovered when they opened me up. The surgeon told me they took 3 buckets of scum out of me.
Honestly, that wasn’t the worst. The worst happened after, I spent another 2 1/2 months in the hospital and when I left I promised myself I would never let myself go thru it again.
There have been some good times since and that’s nice. I’m saying the price at the time was extremely high. If I had not been concerned with how my mother would take me dying I would not have made it. I later read in my file that the doctors did not think I would survive.
I also went thru a lot of pain after release from the hospital, crippling levels where at times I could barely move (in one case I couldn’t move at all and the fire department had to break down my door so the paramedics could get to me.) The medical system was not sympathetic, and it took me 8 tries to find to a sympathetic doctor, since there was so much fear I just wanted pain drugs. (I did, but not to be abuse the damn things.)
There are a lot of fates worse than death.
Anyway, if God created all of this deliberately, he’s an evil POS. The only semi-Christian faith that makes sense to me is gnosticism, as Mark Level alludes. Obviously there is not an all powerful all good God.
That said, I am also not saying there is not a lot of good stuff in life or that we should all kill ourselves. Just that sometimes death is by far the lesser evil, and that anything we can do to reduce suffering is good by me and if that means changing our bodies, I’m down for it.
Dan Kelly
Ian I remember when you wrote about that previously and I was shocked that it happened in Canada where you yourself have said things are generally better than the US.
I think Canada just announced some somewhat substantive stipends for various levels of lower and middle income households?
It is hard to see that in the US any time soon.
Earlier intervention with better treatment by not only competent doctors and nurses and what have you but also all of the above having ‘good bedside manner’ would produce different outcomes.
The rich and ‘well-to-do’ all have that.
You are questioning the wisdom of the all-powerful all-seeing god the creator?
The one who creates and sits back and watches wars and genocides unfold around the globe while simultaneously helping other peoples achieve great heights?
He helped the knicks win dude.
Thanks again Ian.

Some responses to others since my previous post.
To mago, sorry to hear it; having taught professionally for over 3 decades, I actually got steered to teach because (a) I loved school, endlessly curious, a refuge from my dad’s anger I wasn’t a Carbon Copy of him, and (b) I read constantly, and (c) I had 2 older mentors when I was in N’Awlins, both were Gay Catholic teachers, one was totally asexual, the other had fun, the first one helped me when I nearly became homeless after returning from outside USA, got me a berth housesitting for a friend of his, long enough that I went back to my previous place of work to get a recommendation, got hired on the spot. My friend Martin, asexual, had an interesting story of when he realized he’d never get it on: He went of vacation to gay SF (now both NOLA and SF are very gay places, I’ve lived in both), he was at some club looking for a hookup, and he saw a former public school student of his, rushed out in horror!! Gave up on physical realization of his desires, rather sad. . . . Anyway, I’ve mentored and helped lots of younger people, had friendships, lasting, with former students over many years. I have lost some recently, good friend of mine had an older wife, Columbian like his parents, after 7 years he realized she was just using him, he not only earned all the money but he did the cooking and cleaning at home, she was still “learning English” (after 7 frigging years? Guess she wasn’t smart either), he finally got an online German girlfriend, had to split with her and move back in with his parents, he’s only like 33, but it’s still pretty pathetic. He’s completely dropped off the face of the earth, though when he was hitting the initial rough patch, he called me for my opinions, etc. I was supportive within reason, he’s very over-analytic (Sun, Moon and Ascendent all in water signs). I’ll probably never hear from him again. He’s suffering too much to bother me with it. But what are friends for? I don’t think my friend Jonathan is dead or missing, but seems he might be dead inside.
I disagree a bit with Bob, for once. The Workerist, psuedo-Socialist Left might be the Worker Bees you say, the anti-Civilizational or Libertarian Anarchist Left do not subscribe to that Living Death that you rightly call out. It’s nearly the 2030s, this shitty country is NEVER going back to FDR era Soft Socialism of 9-10 decades back. And the Transhumanist Left? No such animal, doesn’t exist.
To Dan Kelly, yes, Christie a worthless Piece of Shit, killed people during BridgeGate. Kushner Senior reprehensible, set family members, brother-in-law, up for sexual blackmail but never . . . you know what, if you listened to the podcast link, he likely did kill tenants with black mold, no heat in winter, illegal evictions etc. Epstein Class, why not? And that pic of him on the Beach when he shut down all the New Jersey Beaches says a lot. But yes, home of the fictional Tony Soprano, in college I met a Mafia Royalty kid, “Drew”, first man I ever saw grab and stroke his dick while talking to me. (I didn’t take it as a come-on, I was only 17, I think it was just something people in those circles did.) Also, your take on marijuana is good. I am very Intense due to the WASP-wannabe Hothouse my parents (who couldn’t be WASPs) raised me in, along with Mad Comics when I was 14, subversive Harvey Kurtzman Jewish outsider humor, and Punk Rock, Blank Generation age 17, pot saved my soul as well. Only did “Wake ‘N Bake” for a couple of months, that is soul death, but in the evening with a nice glass of red wine and some music or a film, it’s a huge help.
To Ian, I 100% agree Ian, “There are fates worse than death.” When I was about 22, and older, divorced, alcoholic dude shared an apt. with 3 of us younger folks. His wife had divorced him and kept the kids who he never or barely ever saw, he came home from work in the evenings with a 6-pack, drank himself comatose in front of the Boob Tube before rinse and repeating. The Living Dead, severe depression, no Hope. (Better than false hope, I suppose.) My dad wanted to go at the end, he’d given up, his wife who he genuinely loved had severe Alzheimers, hadn’t been verbal for at least 15 years, wasting away down to 85 lbs. when she passed (2 years after him.) Dad was still handsome in his 70s, had opportunities with older ladies, never took them, not interested.
Thanks for getting my Gnostic references, Ian, mago and some others do. Actually you may already know, the earliest reference to the child Jesus comes from the Essenes, not the disciples of his adulthood, he was a thoughtless, cruel child, he would turn frogs into statues, his toys, once when he had a child rival he just struck him dead (with magick, not with a fist), totally amoral as most children are, until age 7 or so. (From memory, might’ve gotten a detail wrong, Mr. Goggle has a nice piece on the banned Gospel of Thomas, if you have a spare half hour, see here– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ed3nPzgNuo
Shamanism and finding the Gods yourself is, to me, always the best Path. Do not conform to organized religion, it’s a bad narcotic, and stultifies your intellect. I particularly like the Trickster Gods, they give and take about equally (well, unless like Little Jesus they outright kill someone). I highly recommend to the possibly interested Harry Kunzru’s book, Gods Without Men. A haunted desert area, UFO Cult infiltrates it seeking Mysteries, it gets pretty creepy, no spoilers though. Some years after I picked that up and bought it at the bookstore, he started writing Harper’s “Easy Chair” column, a brilliant polymath. This is why I love Crowley’s writing as well, he was incredibly talented as a speaker of dozens of languages (not as great as his model, Sir Richard Francis Burnton, nor his casual friend James Joyce, but quite knowledgable), a shitty human being at times, I don’t admire his spying for MI-5, though acknowledge he was great when he was spying on the rise of the Nazis in Berlin for 2.5 years in the mid-30s before he had to flee for his life. His politics were bad, growing up rich he hated Socialism, informed (like Orwell) on Communist “friends”, but had a giant Anarchist streak as well, at least as to Sex, Drugs, and Poetry, his aesthetic. (He died in 1947, Rock ‘n Roll barely a gleam in some young eyes then.)
My favorite Crowley quote: “I slept with faith and found a corpse in my arms on awakening; I drank and danced all night with doubt and found her a virgin in the morning.” Skepticism is the Royal Road to Wisdom, don’t try any spiritual work without that in your kit-bag, it’s like interstellar hitchiking without a towel.

“slope” is an ethnic slur, and there are plenty of Asians in Silicon Valley. I imagine this was unintentional, but in any event it’s not up to your usual high standards.

If there still exists a few square meters of the Bikini Atoll my fervent wish is for the Sacklers to live out their days in exile there. They falsified studies for both the effectiveness and addiction potential of oxycodone. The result is most other opiates are off formulary and too, there is a raging opioid addiction crisis. Which means that if one needs pain medication, like myself, the quantity prescribed is and insufficient dosage over too short a period.
I wiped out on my mountain bike. Broke my humerus and two ribs. It took over a week to schedule surgery and I am now on my fourth day post surgery. It is really dispiriting to feel pain for a protracted period like this. What compounds the annoyance is the lecture about using pain medication as a backstop for stuffing yourself with ibuprofen and acetaminophen in response to my complaint of being in constant pain.
Thirty seven years ago when I was on a training ride (former triathlete) going 30 mph a car going 35 mph veered across the road and hit me head on. Goodbye triathlon career. How I survived is an unanswered question. What I do know is for the 2 month period of immobilization, there was a ready supply of meperidine and my suffering was minimal.
Times change, and not for the better. Thanks, Sacklers.
david lamy
A typo fix as the sentence should read,
… the quantity prescribes is an insufficient dosage over too short a period.
Pain sucks. I hate having difficulty concentrating and writing.
mago
Pain management. It’s a sore subject. Sorry.
I’ve suffered everything thing from mountain bike accidents with sprains and fractures and road rash to bone breaking fever (dengue ) to having multiple teeth pulled simultaneously. I tried codeine and acetaminophen and even OxyContin, but ultimately rode it out, not because I’m some macho tough guy, but because some were ineffective (Tylenol) and some produced unpleasant side effects such as constipation, foggy mind and irritability.
I live with constant joint and muscle pain despite an active daily physical regimen. It’s part of my world, but it grows increasingly difficult. I find low doses of THC/CBD to help, btw.
Plugging into a machine seems like an exercise in futility, but we’re all straw clutching these days.
And oh yeah, I just wanted to say that I don’t know where warvigilent is coming from. Don’t know why he or she gives a good flying fuck about the supposition that anyone here is looking to flush the toilet on a shitty existence. That’s not what I see, but what do you care? Not to get pugnacious about it or anything. Let it go. The unicorns fled the world long ago and there ain’t no coming back.

“The problem with transhumanism is transhumanists counting virtual people who don’t exist and pretending their making decisions which will make trillions of people in an imaginary future better off while hurting people living today.”
That is a description of “effective altruism,” not transhumanism.
Jan Wiklund
We all welcome medical advances. Even when it comes to prosthetics. But fantasies of eternal life are just that: fantasies. Even in theory. For all matter wears out when it is used. Even biological matter. This is a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics.
This applies to the central nervous system as well. Some argue, for example, that Alzheimer’s disease is purely a matter of degeneration – that is, something we would all suffer from if we lived long enough. Some suffer earlier, some later.
And if the central nervous system wears out, so does our personality. What we call the ‘soul’ is merely the body’s cybernetic function.
Admittedly, we can live beyond the usual 80–90 years we live in the West. In Okinawa, it used to be very common to live past 100. This was because they ate healthily. When American fast-food culture spread from the military base, life expectancy fell rapidly.
Mark Level
I’m responding to a mago post where he calls out somebody going as warvigilant for dumb comments. I don’t think it’s entirely fair, I looked back to early this month and saw only 2 comments by him/her/them. They get a 50% approval rate from me, which even LAS earned at times (excluding the Kill All Russians vomit).
WV disagreed with me citing the Harper’s piece on Non-Breeders, well-reasoned, Human Life is Suffering, these people just have the Intellectual Integrity to admit it to themselves, which I respect. They’re not coercing others to their view, sneaking birth control drugs into the water supply, etc. I didn’t breed. I had one scare in my life where my lover missed her period, possibly pregnant, but then it just arrived late. We were both relieved, alike in most respects but it never would’ve worked long-term, Glass Half Full Me vs. Nothing is Good Enough for Me whining her (a Virgo Sun; the Zodiac’s perfectionists and believe they have all the answers, Nope!) wv did a sloppy broad brush; he’s free to reject this view, I have no problem with that, but uses a total Straw Man, bad faith argument.
And on the other hand, this response to KT Chong’s virulent intolerance and hatred of any- and everyone who’s not as hatefully bigoted and narrow-minded and patriarchal and Thomas Hobbesian as he is, believes the State is God, humans are worthless and should have no personal Agency, God-Kings (once in awhile I Queen I guess, see Katherine the Great) get to dictate social morality and sexual behavior, spy on you, and as in Texas, when the SCotUS Right Wingers finally said the fascists went too far, breaking into a house with 2 gay men in the midst of a consensual act, roughing them up and arresting them. More Fascist than the likes of Antonin Scalia? Wow!!
Here’s wv’s post from early in the month:
“Bunch of puritans….
Gender rights are human rights … do you need to be reminded that those icky minorities are human too?
parroting right wing bullshit but nothing new here. Lot of smart people but still a lot of bad thinking. The lesson of trump was that as a society , as a people we are a lot dumber than we thought or at least there isn,t anybody really smart in control anymore. But the positive takeaway is that the rich and their servants are absolute fucking morons.
Oh any one with the I predicted this… I predicted that blah blah,… yeah yeah nostradamas we all saw blade runner or anything cyberpunk, or tonnes of fantasy / sci fi that was just abstractions of our current world . Video games were great because they weren’t so afraid to say rich people bad. The fallout series some might know now originated in a games series in the 90s, the game called out a bunch of interesting bits, the rise of Scientology/ the popluarity and addictive potential of Magic the Gathering card game/ and that the us government is essentially deep state fascist dictatorship that serves only the rich. Hell tank girl is looking pretty accurate , sans kangaroo hybrids.
but yeah, everybody is special but your not that special.”
Okay, I’ll take spud’s correctly calling things as true, his record posting here supports that. BUT–
warvigilant spoke to me as an ally, he beat me to the punch on calling out KTC’s fascistic Sex Hate. Puritans indeed, somebody else is having fun, how dare they, jail or even kill them!!
KTC is practically Trumpist except for his Sinophilia, he’s entitled to that but Ian had to do a post rightly calling Bullshit on his Tribalist “China is greater than any other society that has ever existed,” by what metrics? Now a rational case could be made, no doubt, in terms of the amount of freedom Chinese have, the strong economy that actually benefits nearly all and not as in the West a tiny minority of predators, the sagacity of Chinese culture and leadership, etc. But this WE are the only good Civilization and everyone else lives in the Jungle, we are the Garden (pace Josef Borrell) is just sick racism. It’s very similar to the Ethno-Supremacist Settler-Colonialist Apartheid State that controls the US Congress, Media, Courts etc. and that is hated world-wide. Not a good look!!
Who died and declared KT Chong the Status of God, to determine how others live their personal lives? Nobody, obviously. Does he want to burn faggots and dykes at the stake, publicly? I don’t think I’m straw-manning here, I think such goals are implicit in his hate-spew.
He also extrapolates improperly from Chinese policy and grants to other Authoritarian States, specifically the U$A, to copy Chinese policies that simply don’t fit the multicultural society Round Hole into which this Square Peg must be Pounded, at the price of others’ rights to personal autonomy and basic choices, control of their own bodily autonomy, KTC thinks bitch’s wombs belong to Men, right to speak a “minority” language in areas (Texas, New Mexico, San Lorenzo and San Leandro, California, Miami, e.g.) where the language, Spanish, is spoken by majorities, large or small, and has been for just over a century longer than English in North American history. Fuck that fascist bullshit!! Thank you to wv for calling it out, beat me to it.
I practice the 11th Commandment, “Thou Shalt Mind Thine Own Business.” Okay, that doesn’t apply to the Epstein Class, or the Looters, but as to my neighbors’ daily life, it does. It doesn’t apply to Cannibals, serial killers, actual predators, it does apply to ordinary “deviants.” Get a fucking life!!
So I’m with mago on the projection viz non-breeders. I’m not on the live and let live, mind your own business, stop being a Hate-filled Puritan busybody stuff that KT Chong so proudly shrieks about. WV is a 45–60% ally of mine, I’m not a purity pony, I’d like to support real allies and not be isolated by “the tyranny of small differences.” I’ll even endorse about 8% of what KTC says that is rational, insightful and not hate-poisoned & fear-filled. Now I don’t just concede that China imposing one central written language over a vast territory with several hundred languages orally different and often incomprehensible was a stroke of genius. But KTC’s belief that if (his) “Daddy” Trump were to make the USA English Only (a centuries-old Republican, White Man Wet Dream) that’d be super-duper, is pathetic. (Okay, don’t want to strawman, perhaps he’d allow the Chinese diaspora alone to speak it inside the home, not out on the streets.) Newsflash, the 1493 Spanish Settler Colonialist occupation of Hispanyola, etc. was extra-territorial to modern US borders, let’s assume they got here late, 1500. That means Spanish has been spoken where I live, New Mexico, for 526 years, considerably longer than English has been spoken. And over half the populace here speaks Spanish, just some lazy Gabachos who prefer English don’t learn it. Oh, and see here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_colonization_of_the_Americas, it spread as far North as Canada and even Alaska briefly. . .
How long has English been spoken in current USA borders? Jamestown, Virginia, 1606, 106 years (roughly) fewer than Spanish. But as I said about sex, different strokes for different folks, live and let live, if you wanna speak English, it’s your right. It’s my right to prefer Spanish and speak both English and Spanish, as needed. It’s the right of Maori immigrants to the US to speak their language, etc.
Oh, and I have to correct something I said on an earlier thread. The perhaps departed (?) Troll Supremo, Lie and Suborn, falsely accused me of being a doctrinaire “Marxist,” Lol, swing and a miss. But I am not & never have been a Doctrinaire Marxist, as stated, Karl a great Economist, mostly, and great sociologist and pamphleteer with Engels as well, but “Dialectical Materialism” is bullshit. I don’t wish to throw out the Baby with the Bathwater, however, so will add what I should have. There are many clear-thinking, rational modern Marxists I admire greatly. Kshama Sawant, in Seattle, successfully raised the area Minimum Wage to $17.13 hourly when on the City Council, and the city still exists and is prospering, not destroyed and burnt to the ground per Randian-Hayek doctrines. Federal minimum wage in US remains $7.25 in shitholes like Alabama, hasn’t been boosted by Congress’ elites since 2009, not sure if last time was under Obama possibly, but he raised it only slightly if so (probably not under Bush first days of 09). I like Naked Capitalism, Yves Smith very good on MMT and most issues. Richard Wolfe and Michael Hudson, great populist economists, slant Marxist in my eyes. Podcasters who are Marxist and even Communist Adjacent who I respect are “Tusker” from Arkansas, a lady friend and sometimes substitute host on Due Dissidence, the great Garland Nixon and his friend Jodi Braer, Garland a retired Police Officer (might’ve been a Chief, I don’t know details), Braer a member of CPUSA, a bit far-out for me, but mostly right about economics and pushing for a brighter future.
I try to follow Frederick Douglass’ admonition, ally with anyone to do right and no one to do wrong. Seems mostly clear and sensible to me. There’s some real “Transhumanist” improvement, potentially. No revolution by an individual, it’s a group project.

I had thought that ” transhumanism” had a much narrower definition. I had thought that “transhumanism” meant very strictly the invention and creation of such powerful Artificial Intelligence and the machines to run it on that the “transhumanist” could upload his entire mental being into the computer itself where it would run forever and ever, meaning that his computer-uploaded self could live forever and ever in the computer. Thereby transcending his human body limits, allowing for the discardment of that body. One of these narrowly-defined transhumanists is Raymond Kurzweil.

I used to think I was an antihumanitic self-hating antihumanite. But a series of steps and thoughts led me to understand that we humans are the last of the Great Ice Age Beasts ( High-Classical Pleistocene Megafauna). As such, we are interesting and worth preserving right along with the eco-bio world we live in. ( I personally am child-free because I grew up abused in the sort of subtle brain-burning ways that no policeman or social worker could ever detect ( academic intellectuals are good at doing that to their children). So I grew up immunized against “family” and allergic to the very concept. It wasn’t an ethical decision on my part. It was a revulsion and aversion much deeper than that. The children I never had are the children at zero risk of ever having been abused).
If I could improve my own physical condition by expressing my wishes to a magic genie, I would wish to have a body-brain-mind combining the Best and Most of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon Man. I would be a Perfect Cro-Manderthal Man.
And I would want to live for several million healthy disease-free years to see what will happen . . . with a suicide option in case I couldn’t take it any more.

If the narrowly-defined transhumanists . . . the Singularian seekers of the Omniscient Omnisentient God-Machine get their God-Machine created and get their consciousness uploaded into it , I hope it turns on them and fixes it so that they have no mouth and they must scream for all eternity.

Thumbs up O Level one, although I take issue with a few matters, but I’m trying to adhere to a vow taken this afternoon to shut up and butt out. We’ll see how long that lasts. . .

Apologies for my more abrasive comments, invective might seem like an effective way to make a point but not often. My posts dont often pass the filter but i accept that as i will often not hold back my opinion on certain groups.
To the actual topic on hand, I look to gaming both digital and physical as a medium for thinking about and experimenting with where it goes. cyberpunk 2070 is a leading example of the genre and some of the themes of trans humanism via cybernetic and digital augmentation. from just neural link ports to full body replacement ( ala battle angel atlia) it is certainly trans human.
One aspect of trans-humanism that i think the common thought lines and the correspondent of mago in the second comment get absolutely wrong is the whole upload to the digital space and live forever thing.First : just simply, anyone here ever have to delete the original copy when they send a file or burn a cd ect. When you are digitized ( if that could every really work) , its just a copy of you at best, you are still alive and will still feel, die etc. The you who your felt existence is , is still stuck in the meat sack. Think the Arnold cloning movie where the gunshot villain brain scans himself into his clone but the clone was just a bastard like him and just took the clothes from the dying original, or the mercenaries in Avatar 2 , just copies put into hybrid bodies, the originals are dead.
So unfortunately methinks the worst for Mago’s friend, not to be dark but if he was right, he could still say hi digitally, and if I am then nothing to stop the original and clone from saying hi.
Me thinks any kind of brain upload is centuries away regardless, we just dont know enough about the human brain and how one could replicate that digitally. Even computers have a difficult time if not impossible time working with wrong hardware /software.
What exactly allows you to function digitally anyway? How do you not immediately go insane/brain dead .The physical human brain can do a decent job but still fails pretty hard, how is a system totally unlike an actual brain supposed to do a better job? Spoilers: the recent successful independent series the amazing digital circus essentially takes a look at this as says its pretty likely ,if not inevitable a digitized human brain will eventually crack and become unstable and dangerous.

I’ve had this notion of ‘if we could clone copies of ourselves, and transfer our consciousness from a decaying body to a new one, and obtain immortality that way, what would the consequences be?” Of course, now the technology doesn’t exist, the animals we clone also contains the damaged DNA of the adult clone, so the cloned offspring often develop the conditions and afflictions of old age while still young.
But if we could, it would screw royally with our society and its morals. Assuming we couldn’t grow an adult body, there would be “children” running around older than you in experience and knowledge.
I agree, extending years in a declining body isn’t my ideal of a fun life. Already our system runs that IF ordinary people are lucky enough to get the time and freedom to actually enjoy life, which only our masters can do, it’s at ages where you have lost the ability to do much of what you’d like to do.
