The horizon is not so far as we can see, but as far as we can imagine

2017 Fundraiser Ends

We raised a little over 10k, meeting all stretch goals. I’ll start work on an e-booklet which will include core essays, discussions, and a few additional essays. Many of these will be published as posts first.

Thanks to everyone who gave. It all helped.

Non-“special” fundraising, without particular appeals, continues through the year, and helps me understand the demand for my writing, so if you want to give, please do. (It helps feed me, in other words.)

The results of the work I do, like this article, are free, but food isn’t, so if you value my work, please DONATE or SUBSCRIBE.

Matching Funds Finished

The $1,000 matching funds for donations of $100 or more, up to $1,000 is now finished, and we are $9,245. The final stretch goal was $10k, for an essay on how to evaluate risks from upcoming events, and the 2017 fundraiser will end this week.

Thank you so much to everyone who gave.

If you’d still like to give and can, the link is below. As before, if food, rent, or medicine is an issue, please don’t give.

Fundraiser Reaches $7,000 Mark, Almost Over

As of today, we’re at $7,035 (taking subscriptions as triple.) That puts us at:

A collection of 14 older posts with commentary, an introduction, and a conclusion.

$8,000 would get us to 16, and 9000 would add a long piece on how to create a stable government, with 10k (looking unlikely) adding an article on how to evaluate personal risks for the geopolitical events we can forsee.

In general, how much I raise also tells me how much my work is valued and how much I should do (I understand that many people value it and can’t afford to give, nonetheless, I must pay rent, etc…).

Last year’s fundraiser raised about 9K.

I’m going to bring this fundraiser to an end next week. If you like my writing, and can afford to give without hardship, please do. Don’t give, please, if food, rent, or medicine are an issue for you.

And thank you, very much, to all who have already given.

Update: A generous donor has offered to match all donations of $100 or more, up to $1,000 total. I’ll give this its own post on Monday, but the offer is valid now.

Fundraiser Update: C. 6K Raised, 1st Goal Reached

This year’s fundraiser has raised $5,995. Call it 6K.

In general, I’ll write more the more I raise, it tells me how much I should prioritize writing, since I must eat and so on.

But this year it’s also about putting together a collection of the old, good, fundamental articles (which is why I’ve featured some of them over the last two weeks), with prefaces (why I wrote them) and closing remarks (how they hold up, how they relate to other articles.)

Six thousand puts us at the first threshold.

Goal thresholds are as follows:

  • $6,000—12 articles with commentary, an introduction and concluding remarks.
  • $7,000—2 more articles.
  • $8,000—2 more articles.
  • $9,000—A new article on how to design a stable, fair, kind & prosperous government
  • $10,000 – A new article on how to evaluate personal risk in the events to come.

If you value my writing and can give without hardship, I hope you will. If, on the other hand, rent, food or medical expenses are pressing you, please don’t give.

It’s been lovely writing for you all these years, and there’s still important articles to write, along with the occasional commentary on current affairs.

2017 Fundraiser

I am raising funds for 2017. The more I raise, the more I’ll write.

There is one goal this year, in stages.

For some time, I’ve felt that it’s a problem that fundamental articles I’ve written, over many years, aren’t available for reference. Even long term readers may not remember them well, or be able to find them, and new readers have no easy, good place to start to understand a world view that is foreign to most.

A lot of pieces I write are just responses to the moment, but many of them are attempts to explain fundamental issues about which people are confused. Why beliefs matter, why ideology is important, how the unemployment rate is used to crush wages, how the international trade and finance system is intended to keep radical governments from succeeding, what money actually does, what money measures, and so on.

So, the goal this year is to put together a collection of such articles, with commentary on each piece: Why it was written, what is meant to be learned from it, what else to read. I will do one every three weeks or so and at the end put them into one document, available to all, and linked to prominently on the front page.

As always, please don’t give if your personal situation is precarious with respect to food, housing, or medical care.

Please use this to talk among yourselves, should you choose. Trump fires Comey (he needed firing, but, ummm, not like this); and Sessions decides that the drug war should go back to the 90s.

Ick.

Round two of shuddery-cold fever has me in its grip, so please use this threat to talk among yourselves, should you so wish.
