The horizon is not so far as we can see, but as far as we can imagine

To all a Merry Christmas

and peace on earth for all.

Off to Vegas tomorrow

Vacation time.  By my count, my first actual vacation in over 20 years (ie. I’m not adding a few days on to what is essentially a business trip.)  Will see how the backscatter machines/patdowns go.  If they go too badly this may be the last time I visit the US unless I’m being paid very well to do so.

If you’re in Vegas, and you’d like to get together, drop me a note at iwelsh-at-ianwelsh-dot-net.  I’ll be there for about a week.

Posting may or may not be light, hard to say.

Personal Attacks and Trolling in Comment Threads

I like my commenters and readers.  There’s virtually no one who comments here regularly I don’t think I’d like in person.  I have continued blogging out of a sense of obligation to people who have read me for years.  I would personally greatly appreciate it if folks would stop the personal attacks.  If necessary I will start deleting comments or shutting down comment threads.  But I really want to avoid the irritation, both to you and me, of either mandatory registration or author approval comments, or a combination of both.

And I don’t think there’s any commenter here who can’t look at what they write and know themselves if it’s a personal attack or trolling.

Not everyone here likes each other, not everyone here agrees with each other and that’s fine: we discuss important issues and people should be passionate.  When that passion starts driving people away, when it starts turning personal amongst people who are basically on the same side, it becomes a problem.  So, please, if you disagree with another commenter, by all means say so politely, but no more personal attacks.  As for trolling, you know it when you see it, please refrain.

Oh, and if your comment doesn’t show up, it’s almost certainly due to the automatic spam filter, not due to anything manual. At this point I haven’t manually added anyone to the spam filter.  I often am offline or don’t check the spam filter for some time, so don’t take it personally.  You can contact me at admin-at-ianwelsh-dot-net if you think you’re caught in the spam filter.  Again, I may not see your email for some time depending on what’s going on in my life, so if you don’t get an immediate reply, it’s almost certainly not that I’m deliberately ignoring you.

Corrente is fundraising

If you value what they do and you can afford to help, you should give. Stuff that’s free, isn’t.

Off to Vegas

and Netroots Nation 10, tomorrow.  Decided to go early and return a bit late so I could spend some time in Vegas, see some shows and help Vegas’s economy by losing some money at the tables.

If you’re going to be at NN, or you live in Vegas, and you’d like to meet, feel free to drop me a line at iwelsh-at-ianwelsh-dot-net.

There will be some updating while I’m there.

Heading to America’s Future Now Conference

June 7-9th I’ll be in DC for the America’s Future Now conference, run by Campaign for America’s Future.  In exchange for letting my readers know about it, I get free registration (but not a free flight or hotel room).  Obviously registration is the least of the costs, and it’s not why I’m going.

I’m going for three reasons: first, because Campaign for America’s Future Now is about the most left wing an organization can be and still operate in the beltway.  I’m curious to see just how left that is when the hair’s down.

Second, because of the guest list.  It includes Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Alan Grayson, Arianna Huffington, Markos Moulitsas, Van Jones, Gov. Howard Dean, Rep. Donna Edwards, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Richard Trumka, Andy Stern, Bob Herbert, Juan Cole, Digby, Deepak Bhargava, James Rucker, Drew Westen, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Robert Kuttner and Lizz Winstead.

These folks are, with a few exceptions, again, about as left wing as you can be and still expect not to be laughed at in DC (and in a couple cases, a step or two too far left.)  I want to hear, from them, where the acceptable left is in DC.  What’s the leftmost thing you can say?  What’s the leftmost thing you can expect to pass?  What do they really think of the Tea Party?  What do they really think of healthcare, the just passed primary season, and the upcoming elections? What do they really think about financial reform, immigration and so on.

Not that everything they say will real.  There’ll be plenty of pandering, but there’ll also be plenty of revealing moments.

Third, of course, is to meet friends.

If you’re considering going, you can see the agenda here, and the registration is here.  And whether you’re going or not, if you’re in DC around then and interested in meeting (I’ll be there on the 6th, leaving the 9th) drop me a line at admin-at-ianwelsh-net.

Off for a bit

I’m moving Sunday, and my internet is moving Saturday, so I may or may not be online much for a day or two or three, depending on how the migration goes and if there are any problems.  See you all on the other side.

Stirling Newberry and Ian Welsh on Blog Talk Radio

Stirling and I discussed items ranging from China’s potential currency re-valuation to Greece’s debt, to financial reform, to Britain’s election, and much more.  For those who wonder what Stirling’s been up to, he discusses his latest activities near the end of the clip.
