So I read online about a No Kings mini-gathering which was supposed to take place in a downtown micropark called Liberty Plaza here in Ann Arbor, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. That’s what it said yesterday.
Sometime, maybe last night, it got changed to 9:30 – 12: 00 at the Federal Building instead.
So of course I got to Liberty Plaza and found no such thing happening. So I sat on one of the chair-benches from 1-3 to honor my own good intentions by sitting there watching everything and nothing.
A neighbor where I live was going to the event in Ypsilanti. I will ask him how it was, and I will ask how many/few Black people were there, to see if the Silent Absence basically continues.
Corn . . . I had planted corn in early June and zero came up. So I replanted in late June with kernels from more recent ears, in case the first batch had simply lost viability over time. 13 seeds came up and grew 13 plants. I got 12 ( I think) ears in all. When they are totally dried, I will strip off the husks and then count them to be sure. One plant grew zero ears, one plant started and failed to finish ears. The other plants all had one successful ear per plant, except one plant which had two ears. One of the ears had 8 rows of kernels, the other ear had 12 rows of kernels. How did that happen? It is a mystery of the corn.
Garlic I had planted just before freeze-up last pre-winter mostly sprouted and grew. I pulled it up and it is finishing drying and curing. The best to replant and the rest to eat or give to people.
Potatoes . . . 2 years ago I had some potatoes last in amateur home storage all through winter into very latest spring. So I planted them just to see. I got some potatoes back. I planted the longest lasting of those in late June this year. Planted 10, got back 51, ranging from smaller than ping-pong balls to decent medium size. Will see how long they store without sprouting and next year plant the longest-storing ones if any.
In mid August I planted some other longish-lasting potatoes I also had just to see if they could produce in that limited timespan. When the vines have died all the way back I will dig up that bed and see if they could produce any potatoes.
Beyond that I have learned not to say what I “will do” and mostly just say what I have actually done. When enough more has been done, I will mention what that was.

Congress. They need not bother ever meeting again, Trump (or rather, his Court) can now rule by decree. They have given up the powers of the purse, of declaring war, and even of promulgating laws. What is left? Giving tours of empty, useless buildings?
Civil Rights. Dying by the day. Dying in the light. No one really cares; the best they can do is hang out in front of the coffee shop on a pretty Saturday and wave around art on a stick or cosplay amphibians.
Black Folk. Where did they all go? Hiding until all the Brown Folk are gone, I guess. Waiting their turn, how polite of them.
Brown Folk. Those here without papers are either in hiding, running home, or stupid (because they think they are safe since they voted for the Emperor). It is only going to get worse. The first new true enslavement programs will start with them, soon. Then it is the turn for the Black Folk, once they have been disarmed.
And then the Concentration Camps get all “fired up” to deal with other Undesirables…
White Folk. Looking mighty good for them, if they are already wealthy. The other 90%? Not so good. Gonna be dying in the streets once the money runs out for the food, shelter, and medicine. Poor getting poorer thanks to the tariffs, but that’s what they were all about.
Economy. It seems the Powers That Be could not wait for the American Crisis of the Third Century to completely destroy the Servant Class, so they are accelerating it by sucking out every penny they can from anyone not already rich. Once they do that and pry every last gold tooth from the bodies left in the camps, claiming it will all go to pay down the US Debt, they will steal every penny and just bankrupt the government, selling everything off to themselves for pennies on the dollar.
US Trade. Going the way of the dodo. No one will trade with the US that does not absolutely have to, such as our satraps or the criminally deranged.
Does it Matter? No, not really. The next major shift in the climate will destroy what little insurance protections remain, causing a complete collapse in housing and construction. Then, the ecological collapse of agriculture follow the US financial collapse of the farming sector, and tens of millions starve. But by then, the only news that will be available will be Trump TV, and of course, everything will be bigly doubleplus good in Trumpland…

On another more personal note, I have a crystal ball that was my grandfather’s and which he stored in a footlocker along with a lot of WWI memorabilia. As I child it all fascinated me, especially the crystal ball. I always peppered him with questions about it.
He was vague, but when I was a teenager, he relayed that he came by it from a gypsy woman who nursed him back to health after a car knocked him off his bicycle one night after his railroad job. Who knows the truth?
It was the sole inheritance that my parsimonious grandmother deemed worthy of me. I was 20 then. Some 50 years later it’s still with me through more locations and transitions than could fill a volume. It sits on a windowsill overlooking a vast valley and holds upside down reflections of pine tree limbs, sky and clouds and light.
It’s not a tool of prophecy, but a reflection of the mind and hence the world.
Anyway. to quote Howlin Wolf once again, I got a feeling about the future and it ain’t too good, I know that.

Here, and no further can we go, they say, as such might endanger their power… and bring down the Wrath of the Gods on those of Dark Age minds.
They get only so far, they reach for the stars (literally or metaphorically), and are dragged back into darkness.
The Great Endarkening is upon us. The Dark Lord and his minions glut themselves on their hatred. And soon not even embers will glow, no more points of light in the Darkness, which will consume us all.
And in that darkness, in time, that hate, that terrible dragon, will find nothing left to consume but its own tail, and there will be nothing left at all after the gnawing echoes fade.

I am those people: boomer, white, retired, elderly for all practical purposes, pathetic. And, in my way I have been wishing for thirty years for people to wake up and come back to some kind of “normal”, some sort of shared reality, shared morality
People protest when they are otherwise powerless. I get that. I am not sure the “No Kings” protesters understand just how powerless they are, gesturing in protest for their own private reasons without knowing even who is organizing their protest for what shared, public purpose.
