Anton’s life was spared by a German Sergeant who placed the boy in the cab of his truck rather than with the other hostages and Anton’s family who were about to be executed in retaliation for the assassination of Inspector Ploeg.
The segeant dropped Anton off at the local police station. There Anton was placed in a cell with the wounded Hannie Schaft who had just taken part in the attack on Ploeg.
It is this chance cell assignment that allowed the world to discover that there was more to this story than meets the eye.
Hannie had no idea that she would reveal the true implications of the assassination that night when she spoke to Anton about PLoeg. Of course that 9 year old boy did not understand what was implicit in her revelation. But he never forgot what she said. If you do not believe that a young boy can remember the words that were spoken years after the event, I will testify that I never forgot the words of my grandmother or grandfather upon hearing of the assassination of President Kennedy, although I was only 3 years old.
Unfortunately the memory of the risks taken by Hannie Schaft and other’s who opposed the spread of facism and imperialism is soon to be washed away like a sand castle on a beach at high tide……..unless it is saved on a thumb drive in another dimension where perhaps it can do some good for someone.
If the US and western militaries are now so weak, then why does the Iraqi government not now say to the US Ambassador in Iraq, unless you want to fight Gulf War 3 US military forces better be on the road back to Turkey in the next 4 hours?
Or why does the Iraqi military not just launch a surprise attack on the US forces in Iraq, and maybe Syria too, and then call up President Biden and say, Unless you want to fight Gulf War 3 we will ship your dead soldiers to the Turkish Border where you can retrieve them?
This does not happen because either the US does not all appear weak to the Iraqi leadership, or the Iraqi leaders are fake Muslims, or it could even be both. The Iraqi leadership may try to defend itself by saying that time is on its side. That would be an arguement that is clearly not a good faith arguement. Time is not on anyone’s side. It is especially not on the side of the Palestinians in Gaza.
